What we do

We take our relationships with our clients a step beyond traditional financial planning. Planning is important. People need a roadmap telling them where they are, where they're headed, and how they're going to get there. Rick is a Certified Financial Planner and planning is central to what we do.

What we do differently than many is to act as an investment coach. What does that mean?

The goal of coaching is to help clients feel completely confident in their investments, know what to expect from them, have peace of mind about their future, and feel safe knowing that they're invested in ways that some of the brightest academic minds in the world suggest, based on 50 years of research.

We don't believe that you should go to a financial planner/advisor/broker, meet with them, and just trust that they know what they're doing. That will always leave doubt lingering in your mind about your investments, especially when the market is volatile and you see your portfolio values changing. You will always wonder if the investment recommendations were right for you.

The alternative is that you are educated about the academic principles of your investments. It is just not sufficient to look at a manager's or investment strategy's track record, because it really is true that past performance is not indicative of future performance.

In the big picture, it's about education. When everything is going well in the markets and the economy, it's easy to have peace of mind about investments, but it's less so when the markets are volatile like 2000-2002 or 2007-2008. Panic and worry set in because people don't understand what they're invested in and what is happening. It sets in because there are so many different messages coming across the TV, internet, magazines and newspapers. It's confusing and difficult for people to know what to believe. This can be when big mistakes are made by investors. The reverse is also true – when markets are going too well, people tend to make decisions to be overly aggressive, or invest in something just because it appears to have a good track record.

We want our clients to develop a basic philosophy about their investments strategy. This can sound overwhelming to many, but it doesn't have to be difficult and confusing.  We've worked with so many of our clients to help them understand this process. It also doesn't have to take a lot of time or effort, just a willingness to listen and learn.

We don't expect our clients to become investment experts or learn how to engineer a portfolio, correlate assets, assess your position on the efficient frontier, rebalance to thresholds or many of the other things that we do. We just want them to know what they're invested in, why they're in it, and what to expect, so that they become comfortable and confident, without regard to the latest investment pitch coming from Wall Street.

Past performance is not a guarantee or an indication of future performance.
